Over the years, many follow-up crowdfunding campaigns allowed further development of the software (e.g. adding support for hex maps and isometric maps, in addition to top-down maps) and tons of content was developed for use in the app, covering all major genres (Fantasy, Modern Day, Sci-Fi, Post-Apocalyse, etc.).

There are currently a staggering 237 content Add-Ons for MapForge (!!!). 60 of them are free, the rest are commercial products, with prices starting at $4. Most Add-Ons are for personal use only, but these Add-Ons allow for publishing and commercial use.

I think that about covers it. Oh, and a few years ago, I also created a companion app called TileForge, for making geomorphic tilesets. Similar model in that you can try it out for free, and a one-time-fee license unlocks high-res output.

They added a Discord Server to help with live support.

While there is yet much to do the following basic features are in place:

• Game creation with full support for video/text chat.
• Map editing with unique terrain pixel art that provides three levels of depth.
• Drag and drop creatures and structures.
• Hundreds of beautifully recreated pixel art monsters, creatures, humanoids (etc) as outlined by the 5E SRD.
• The entire 5E ruleset is fully searchable. Add spells to your character with a single click.
• Tablet support to some degree, though this does need a lot of work still.
• And more…

@Keikaku, Infrno should probably be deleted, too. It shut down in June 2018.

The program should appeal to GMs of face-to-face game sessions and to those using any VTT software, who want to create their own slick-looking battlemaps to visually enrich their RPG sessions, but who find existing mapping programs (including image-editing tools such as Gimp and Photoshop) too intimidating/confusing/expensive.

In early February 2017, I'll be launching a Kickstarter campaign to try to fund the program's development. The software will be priced to be very accessible/affordable, likely in the $20-$25 range (at least during the Kickstarter campaign).

I'm trying to gauge public interest in this, so please let me know if such software would be of interest to you.

I agree, it's kind of sad there aren't more comments, here.

There is currently a Kickstarter campaign underway to develop BRPG v2, which will actually be called Battlegrounds Ultimate (BGU). One of it's goals is to restore full support for Mac OS. A Stretch Goal would add a "free play" mode, where a license would not be required to use the software in actual game sessions (although the featureset would be somewhat pared down). There is even the possibility of offering the user interface in other languages, such as German, French, and Spanish. Please consider supporting this project.

Anyway, I've used Roll20 now for almost 4 years. Here is my #1 comment:

1) The dev staff does not respond to accurate, useful, continuous, value-added critique in any meaningful way and further they actively discourage such critique by doling out commentary points that even apply to suggestions loosely based on your pay level. This is a dystopian way to do things. I've sent them hundreds of great ideas that even from my own perspective as a coder of 30+ years experience would take me only hours to implement and even offered to work with them for free to see features I want and they have essentially just blocked me from dialogue. That kind of insanity is not what you want to see in a public system, especially one that does have a 'free' subscription level.

2) The ENTIRE web would greatly benefit from XML style data set import/export compliance. That is to say that any game system could define (and usually does) a schema for all their data and data relationships. But these should always be published and open to other app developers to use to import/export their compliant data. Why do I say this? Well, no one has made the all-tool yet. That is I have to run my campaign on a good forum site Myth-Weavers and then meet on Roll20 for the VT. But players and I have to duplicate data in at least 3 places, character generator, MW, and Roll20. Frankly, it's time consuming and insane. Because of idiots money grubbing issues we have to deal with the perversity that computers that are supposed to make our lives easier by automation instead GET IN THE WAY intentionally. So, rather than systemically helping us they are being used to systemically lock us out unless we pay or play the way 'they' want us to.

3) I will add that no voip tool is right so far. I have tools that think PTT is pointless, … really. It's so frustrating. I do not care that YOU the idiot app developer think it's pointless. People that use VOIP apps use it so YOU are wrong. Make useful tool, please! I would love one that integrates directly into the VT. Roll20's is hideous. I used DOlby Axon but now it's going away? Why? …

4) Streaming is way way way way too complicated for no valid reason. I detest the idea of citing WYSIWYG development as a good idea here, but, it is. VTs need an integrated, non stupid, press 1 button and it works streamer functionality. If we want multiple streamer apps they should all conform to a protocol standard so they can be plugged in. Combining stream feeds into a final stream product should be trivial.

5) Along with voip I think its patently obvious and ridiculous that they do not have (VTs and VOIP apps) create tab private chat channels. I mean this was available in like the late 80s, WTF is going on here? DMs need to be able to private chat to each player. I know lazy DMs dont. Good DMs do.

This is a pen-paper map, strictly as simple as it can be. Try to offer a free map with some DM options and keep it simple. More, the development project try to give all access to tablet-like users (iPad, iPod, Windows…).

It's all by browser. If I can share the link it will be good.

Have someone looked at SkCombat VT? It still lacks online connectivity but it can be used on PbP games (shared maps) and it runs on laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Also, I don't see Tabletop connect on your list.

For your solitaire needs, Battlegrounds Gaming Engine might be an even better choice (and more economical).

As a free table, it is perfectly usable. You are given access to the City, Wilderness, and Dungeon Master tile sets, and various PC and Monster tokens. There are other conveniences available at a nominal fee to unlock, but even without them, the table is playable.

And as for not usable with other settings.. I have seen many AD&D games run on it, Call of Cthulu.. and I am about to run a Cyberpunk 2020 game on the table. Yes, the formatted character sheet is for 4e D&D, but that doesn't mean other game systems can't be used on it, with a little data entry and custom dice rolls.
